![]() This was barely enough time to visit a local restaurant flooding with business from both local lunchtime and other passengers. It was advertised we would have two hours to explore downtown Burnett and have lunch. Apparently that was another misrepresentation of the trip. We saw no mention of it, nor display of it. Another large disappointment was the lack of the advertised western gun fight. Which is fine although it did negatively impact the quality of time spent in Burnett and exploring the town which was a key experience in the advertised outing. To begin the train left 20 minutes late from the terminal when it was communicated the train would be leaving promptly and on time consistently. I visited and rode the September 7th 10:00 am to 5:00 pm ride to Burnett going out of Cedar Park Wirth the Austin Steam Train Association and I’d like to share my experience that day. My family and I took a ride on the Hill Country Flyer and this a brief overview of our experience and I recommend you heed this review well. Maybe the friendly volunteers of the Austin Steam Train Association should ride the 'other' ride and see what they could do to ramp up the entertainment on their Christmas Express! If you've ever been on a different Polar Express ride, you should not consider this one. The kids sat on Santa's lap long enough for me to snap a photo. We would find him in a mall somewhere! Finally, within the last 10 minutes of the ride, we were greeted, row by row, by a volunteer (they all are) stating that Santa was in the compartment in front of us. Us grandparents made a pact that we would take the boys to Santa after we got off the train if there was no Santa. On the ride back, we began to get worried that there would be no Santa on the train either. Christmas lights on houses were visible every so often. The first hour of the ride was a journey through dark neighborhoods running parallel to the freeway. There was a story read over the intercom that no one could hear over the train noise. There simply was no music, no entertainment to speak of. We waited for hot chocolate for another hour, and finally got up to see what was up and were told to go to the concession car and pick it up! NOT the interaction that the children (and us) were expecting for a ride based on the Polar Express movie. Clause came out and gave cookies to everyone and we thought the entertainment would start then. Once underway, 45 minutes after boarding, we expected to hear Christmas music, see 'dancing elves' down the isles, or some interaction with the children on board, but there was nothing. With small children in tow, there were many, many parents and grandparents wishing they had been informed of this before boarding. We boarded 1/2 hour before departure as instructed, but the restrooms do not function until you are 30 minutes into the train ride. ![]() ![]() I guess because we had attended a different Polar Express in east Texas, our expectations were high for this attraction. ![]()
